Epiphone Acoustic Guitars

When talking about Epiphone, acoustic guitars are not exactly the first things that come to mind.  Sure, they have great electric and bass guitars, but Epiphone acoustic guitars are also worth noting.  They carry the tradition of great sound at low prices, creating an unbeatable performance-versus-price rating.

Epiphone used to be a company all its own, but hard times in the post-World War II years forced them to sell out to the big-name company, Gibson.  Gibson took Epiphone in and gave it a new sense of purpose and direction.  Epiphone became known for producing excellent copies of Gibson models at prices often much lower than those of their original coutnerparts.  It was not too long before Epiphone took on a life of its own, becoming the radical innovator to complement Gibson’s more conservative, traditional approach.

Take for example a case between the Hummingbird models of the two.  A Gibson Hummingbird costs over six times the going price of an Epiphone equivalent.  Admittedly, the Gibson has a better sound, but most people buy Epiphones anyway.  The difference in sound is something that only the most refined enthusiasts can appreciate, and besides playing is easier and more comfortable on an instrument that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.  Thus Gibson acoustics are for the most exacting who have bundles of money to spare, while Epiphone acoustic guitars are more accessible financially though not exactly as good in terms of sound quality.

The Hummingbird is often hailed as “The Classic” among classic acoustic guitars.  It has the look that hails back to a time past and yet remains popular today.  Using the powerful Dreadnought shape, this beauty has an amazing reverberant sound, while maintaining clarity and purity of notes, at the same time achieving balance and smoothness across the scales.

The DR-100 is another classic Epiphone acoustic guitar, favored as an entry-level instrument.  This one has a clean sound across the majority of the range, which is great for those just getting their musical chops.  Easy to play, and easy to pay for, this is one all-time favorite.

The DR-200S is also a Dreadnought-based model, giving it the great resonance that the shape affords.  This is special though, because it uses a solid wood top.  Solid tops actually get better with age, so as you use this guitar, it will actually sound better and better.

If you want something a little different, then you might want to take a look at the DR-212.  This instrument boasts 12 strings, double the normal number.  Double the strings translate into double the sound, meaning higher volume and more blending.

The EJ-200 will remind you of the guitar that the famous Elvis Presley used, and for good reason.  This is the actual model that The King used for many years!  With a round bottom and pinched waist, crown inlays, and “mustache” bridge, this is an unusual and appealing instrument.

Epiphone acoustic guitars may not be the best in terms of sound, but you just cannot beat how good they sound for the price you have to pay for them.

As I was researching guitars, Epiphones kept coming up as a wise guitar choice. They also repeated what you said about not quite being a Gibson, but many still choose Epiphones for close-quality sound. And the price is definitely more affordable!
